Pfizer said they were beginning development on a cholesterol-lowering product that would combine Lipitor with Zetia.
The development program is timed so the combination product could be available when the patent for Lipitor, expires in the U.S. andinternationally, the companies said. Lipitor is expected to face generic competition in the U.S.A. in 2010 or 2011.

Lipitor cholesterol-lowering drug's manufacturer Pfizer Inc. won lawsuit: 74 percent of patients taking the $10 billion a year drug do not need it. While the lawsuit does not dispute Lipitor’s effectiveness in reducing LDL cholesterol in women, the lawsuit points that the ultimate goal of the therapy is to prevent heart attacks, strokes and deaths, which clinical trials have not proven the drug is able to do for women and seniors who has no heart disease or diabetes.
According to the lawsuit, a clinical trial showed that the women who took Lipitor developed 10 percent more heart attacks and heart disease than women who took the placebo pill. Another trial including 5,804 patients aged 70 to 82 found no reduced risk of heart disease for those who did not already have a heart condition.

Pfizer points an analysis of Lipitor showed the drug reduced the risk of stroke and coronary heart events in type 2 diabetes patients who had no known coronary heart disease but who had experienced a recent stroke or mini-stroke.Pfizer said the study showed Lipitor reduced the risk of stroke by 30% and coronary heart disease events and major coronary events by 51%. The company said according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the risk for stroke is two to four times higher among people with diabetes, and heart disease and stroke account for nearly two-thirds of deaths in people with the condition.

Pfizer Inc. said its Lipitor drug reduces the risk of stroke, coronary heart disease events and major coronary events in type-2 diabetes patients.
The trial indicated that Lipitor reduced the risk of stroke by 30%, and coronary heart disease events and major coronary events, including cardiac death and heart attack, by 51%, compared with a placebo. An additional analysis of 781 patients showed that Lipitor reduced the risk of coronary heart disease events by 43%. The risk of stroke and major coronary events was lowered by 12% and 26%, respectively.

Pfizer - cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor maker - was charged that the company deceived the public by failing to warn doctors and patients of the drug's side effects. Patients taking Lipitor - the best-selling cholesterol medicine in the world - began suing Pfizer, alleging that the negative side effects such as muscle pain, nerve damage, nightmares, memory loss and other central nervous system problems were not explained properly when the drug was prescribed.
These lawsuits charge that Pfizer has apparently engaged in a campaign of misinformation, and covered up Lipitor's more serious side effects and promoted the drug at any cost. The sales of Lipitor exceeded $12 billion in 2005. Pfizer advertised safety and effectiveness of Lipitor. But lawsuits do not seek to dispute the drug's effectiveness, but rather its safety.
